Yet after listen₩€ing to Arthur I was intrigued, so w∞™≈e arranged delivery of the D♣€'αSDDAC 1.0 Deluxe DAC, andΩ₽× I have to say spending time with↔<‌ this piece has been an eye-opening e"↑xperience. The DSDAC 1.0 Del"¥≠uxe sells for $6219.§σ®95, which falls into‍↑ the niche of affordable hi¶←←gh-performance audio. I suggest you≥™←∞ look closely at this machin≈£e, because this DAC  ≠≈'plays music in a way that resets the p←φ>"aradigm of what high eγ₩•₽nd digital should cost. In addition, ↕§it has eye catching good ‌σ★looks and a build quality tπ'♦hat is not expected atλ ελ this price range.

The DSDAC1.0 (Deluxe) is the flag≥↑ship model from Cen.Grand∞λ that is a DSD based DAC which resampl₹<©βes all incoming data to t γ ✔he DSD format. The software is embedded on a pa¥β♠ir of Field Programmable Gate Array €∞&(FPGA) chips and allow©♠×​s for DSD conversion starting at DS✘ΩD128 and scales up to DSD1024. The£↕₩Ω reality is this DAC i§€₩ s unusual as it is a sophisticated d¶σ'esign that attacks the challenge★♦s of digital playback in a thoughtful a₽™nd sophisticated manner. Cen.Grand has a ±&≠proprietary feature nam®÷λed "clock blocking" that ♦↑✘™solves anomalies createdα♠ by the digital source ​×∏clock, and does it without using '✔"asynchronous sampling rate conver÷§sion (ASRC), which is an  ×φ≥often-used solution by many dδ♦esigners. Here is the intere•♠α↕sting part about asynchronous datλ£÷Ωa transmission and what clo₽π∑‍ck blocking protocol acc™←‍omplishes. When ASRC is selected, on♣✔δe or more interpolation alg≠✔orithms will be utilized such as>↑ Linear Interpolation, Bilinea₹ ₹r Interpolation, Cubic Spline Interp©↔₽olation, etc. The use of interp>>olation adds non-original data to the m"¥usic stream, the data is no longer bi↕€∏γt perfect. A-synchronous is an impr÷→✘←ovement over synchronous♠ε USB audio in that it all★><$ows the use of a higher•♣ quality local clock in the β$ DAC instead of the one in‍₩ ♣ your computer, however↑₩, it also has an inherent flaλ 'w or drawback in that i€​δt adds this non-orig<$inal data to the music stream.≈¶↑ Audio data is not removed ¶, but additional data is adλ♠αded so, it is no longer technically bit perfect. Cen​↓∞♣.Grand states that ASRC is a©ε♣‌n advanced technology, but it•♦λ negatively affects audio quality. So J←÷<×ianHui Deng has been able ‍ to implement a process that‌ γ synchronizes a low jitter clock↔ < signal at the same time wi∏ ≤"thout ASRC. This is the underlying ma✘β←gic! The integrity of th&♥Ωe data including its t'₹♣iming markers is maintained,ε< but the input clock is rep≥ ↕<laced with a very high-quality local ♥₽ ​femtosecond clock that impr♣←☆€oves the accuracy of the digita¶♥‌l to audio conversion. Th≈©∏σis new incorporated h≠σ ®igh quality clock signal ¶ added to the music data (without t​↑∏εhe interpolation algorithms) en₩®λ>sures a highly precise¶Ω±≤ DA process, so the purit ☆$y of the signal is per÷β× fect, and the original music quality​ε™Ω is maintained. Now JianHui Deng has €α≈‌been able to implement a process th÷><φat maintains a continuous data flow¥↕δ throughout the DAC, &ε₩™and synchronizes a low jitter cloc>§k signal at the same time. The output stage is another building b≠πlock of the DSDAC1.0 (Deluxe)δ‌β DAC. The circuit is a linear balance λφ★d circuit designed b≤'÷∏y JianHui Deng. The power suppl £ y uses dual toroidal tra€≠¥∞nsformers to supply theσ'$ digital and analog halves of tγ™λhe DAC. Discreet components a≤≥∞¥re exclusively used in the output stage✘&, there are no op-amps to be found♣₹∑​ at all. The chassis is buil ★t from substantial aluminum material, a≥¥nd the power supply &σis in a sectioned compartment away•¥ from the main circuit boa©βασrd. A crosscut finish is applied ✔©←¥to the aluminum, which gives the cha∏×ssis a refined presentation. F§©inally, there is electromagnetφ ic isolation between the US≈$B input and the main board≥∏ of the DAC, so every effort to comb∑•‌at system noise is being used in the →←$DSDAC1.0 (Deluxe) by↑ ≈γ Cen.Grand.

My reference record s≤ ‌pinner is a SOTA Cosmos Eclipse/SME ε≠‍↑5 combination that isεγ‌ fitted with a Transfiguration Audio Pr←¶♥oteus cartridge. This pair↑•ing has a cohesive p &resentation that ebbs and flo &∞ws with a refinement that is noδ®≥ t equaled by any of the d∏←Ωigital to analog conver¶±☆<ters I have spent time with. The SOTA ₹↕£₹combination does not lack low level d‍↕etail, is not dynamically limite♦♠±"d, and does not roll Ω≥off the frequency extremes of music. ₩★The Cen.Grand DAC has a cohesive∏λ<  presentation that closely tracks the e'÷××ssence of my vinyl rig, yet has  ≤✔"all the detail and preci↑∑∏sion that quality digital playbac©α♣k is renowned for. On "I C§✘¥an See Clearly Now" by t←πhe Holly Cole Trio I <αam deeply appreciative of how natura≥≈♦±l and unforced Cole'€↓s vocals come through the system. Th✔‍'•is presentation truly reminds me of my☆∞< best moving coil cartri$∞®¶dges, with nuance and detail while mβλ<aintaining an ease of prλ✘"•esentation that just does no≈♠ t occur with most digital systems.™÷ The acoustic bass is p±✘β®owerful with remarkable exten→♦ ♠sion to the lowest registers, yet the£₽ resonance and tone of the wood λ∞"≠body clearly comes throγ♣ugh in spades. The piano '♥passages also have lovely tone and text±↓♣Ωure, yet detail and har'☆γ™monic structure is authσ ∞₩entic and natural. Wha→✔≥t is absent from the Cen.Grand βλ$DAC is any etched instrφ±→↑uments, cold and har≈ shness, or lean and clinic λλal tone. The DSDAC1.0 (Deluxe) DAC do♠‌‌‌es not prioritize detail retr✔☆≥ieval, yet it maintains all×Ω these critical elements'φ, yet the essence of the performa'‌nce is honored and preserved.Ω∏γ This is what audiophiles →‍should expect from their systems, an↓εd the Cen.Grand DAC certainly≈<↔ meets this expectation.

With the DSDAC1.0 (Deluxe) the user has©‍♣ a variety of sampling rates to sel♥'±ect. With PCM source data DS÷λD256 is the only output availaε×βble in non-rising mode. With Risinπ‌g mode select the choice♦λ©s range from DSD128, and then you p∏π&♣rogress through DSD256₩​✘λ, DSD512, and top out♦ ✔ at DSD1024. Additionally, DSD64 Ω​&can be inputted via S/PDIF cable$☆ in DOP mode, and DSD512  φnative through the USB input. This&∞ ​ leads to the question of which sampl™≤↔ing rate is the best? This is a mo≤∞re nuanced question than one might firβπ®st expect, and the answer r₹☆φεeally depends on both t≈'↓he system and the listener. On one hand∞≤☆ a person might expect the highest §γ¥DSD rate to have the grea© ∞test detail and resolution, yet on the ≈₹flip side the first DSD r¥®÷ate may represent the least altered s'β₽ignal. At least this ®>is the way the typical hobbyist would§≠♦↑ look at this question,∏' and I do believe there is an eleme‍‍nt of truth in this perspective. Wπ>ithin the context ofπ© my system, I find a preference ©↑€for DSD128 in rising mode or DSD25γ↓&§6 non-rising, as these setting÷₩s provide a higher degree of ✔ tonal density and textu‍¥¥→re to instruments; while v±←oices tend to ebb an♦ d flow naturally. Now in another sy↕₩stem with a different voici×‌ng, I can see where the higher settiδ♥δngs of DSD512 and DS✘€D1024 would be preferable, and I can ★↓appreciate the flexibi™γlity that is availab₹₹le with this DAC. Whenβ¶‌ playing "Small Blue Thiβ©λng" by Suzanne Vega the prφ§Ω∏esentation of the song was ​"∞‍dark, complex, and melo'∑dic without any hard edges to the∑↓¥​ music. Do remember tβσ>πhat the Martin Logan CLX ART ★• speakers are truth tel™σ♣lers at their innermost core,£§ε and any music that is etcφ×∑©hed or bright will not be romantic∏¶×±ized in any way. When chan☆₽<∞ging the rate to DSD1024 the spα§£atial footprint of t∑♠he music is diminished, and the dec‌<‍ ay pattern of the acoustic gu©✘£÷itar notes shifts to being clippedδ€<λ and truncated. These are not lar±✘ge-scale differences, yet stil♥λδl very apparent withi÷λn the context of my system. §♣Yet this alternate pre™¶sentation that occurs ma♠σ≤↓y be exactly what a d↓♣π¥ifferent type of system ‌≤✔appreciates. For instan"≠××ce, a horn-based system may res©♥÷pond quite positively to these ↑>✘↑differences. The choices of ≈"<sampling rates allow the owner of t♠®©£he Cen.Grand DAC to fi<β→nd the proper fit bet×'↕λween source component, the  ±↕program material, and the rest oΩ€f the system. The album House of Sleeping Beaut✔ ☆₹ies by Lucia Hwong has beφ$γen a reference piece for me for many ye≈↑ars, and early on I planned to gi₹÷'§ve this album an in depth listen. &¥ What I discovered is this pi÷≥★ece creates a wondrous ta§&↔♥pestry of music, with a cohesive presen↓✘tation that I have not experience←±§•d with another digital component. ↕™®​I have encountered other DACs that ©$generate a large soundst§÷<age, but in certain ways the music fee₽÷ls either fragmented or p≠♣β★resents as a patchwork of•≠♦♣ sounds. What amazes me is this>β album is a synthesis of acou₩λ<✘stic instruments and v¥δ±♠ocals that blends with 㱕♣electronic instruments, yet the final ☆ sound is organic and seamless. Certainσ×ly, the CLX ART speakers are sig©£↓nificant contributors to thγ∞e final sound, yet if ↑×₹Ωthe source component is unable ♣≠¥to faithfully resolve the sourceγ∞ material, then all the delicacy an¥φ≈d beauty is inevitably lost. In•♥∑‍ this album the flutes are haun♦©"φting and melancholy, the tra→≤ditional Chinese stringed instr≠¥↔uments are precise as theiγ÷φ‌r notes cascade through songs. The s←>&ynthesized drum lines ble♦$nd naturally with other instrument✘©$s and have a level of resolution t✔₽≤hat belies its syntheti™> ®c nature. Deep electronic bass movemeφ σnts underpin songs and proviβ♥βde a solid foundation to ""∞the higher register ins‌λtruments. With the Cen.Grand DAC in t₹<☆he system, I have experienced the$♠ finest presentation of this albuα≈m that I can recall, which ™λ₽δis quite a memorable experien§¶ce.

One weekend I bypassed the Trin π£ov preamplifier and connected the Cen.G↔σ €rand DAC directly to the Clas×☆∞se Omega mono-block amplifiers vi∑"a the XLR connections. This compoε&nent has a proprietaryελ∑π linear balanced output stage ×​××and a sophisticated volume co♣♥ntrol based on a resistor ladder ✔​>design.
